Abstract

In light of the geoeconomic order of international trade, the European Union—whose value chains in the technology sectors and
the availability of digital products and services are highly dependent on other countries—has launched a series of policy initiatives aimed at increasing competitiveness and fostering innovation in order to achieve greater technological and economic independence. Based on official documents and communications, as well as speeches by the President of the European Commission, this analysis will demonstrate how regulatory simplification, embodied in the Digital Omnibus package, relates to the
European response to the current international landscape, enabling the EU to avoid the weaponized interdependence it faces by strengthening the internal market and, consequently, bolstering economic security.
